clutch won't engage

I am having a common problem listed on the internet. I have 2006 Yamaha FZ6 and going into 1st was causing it to stall out... I replaced the plates... friction and the other plates as well... I have verified correct order of the plates and made sure the alignment of the pressure plate and clutch center. I put the clutch cover back on and was unable to get the clutch to engage... without the clutch cable connected I can push the spring in an the clutch never engages... if I put the bike in first and engage it by hand it never allows the bike to freely roll.. should this engage the clutch or is there something I am missing?

fixed the bike

I am answering my own thread in hopes that I can save someone the same headaches I went thru.

1) I tried to add the plates while the bike was hot... not a good idea.. I accidently left the big metal plate on... and later discovered this because the clutch wouldn't work.

2) I thought that you can engage the clutch by hand when the cable was not connected... this is not the case. The cable has to be connected... the cable is what forces the plates to move.

3) The biggest problem was that the cable needed to be adjusted and you have to take the gas tank and air housing off to properly do this... save yourself headache and don't try to avoid this step... The time you spend doing this will be well worth it when you adjust the clutch cable. After doing this my clutch is working perfectly. I believe that the plates were not needed at all... but just needed to adjust the clutch cable... I did all this because a local shop told me that I needed new clutch plates.

I hope this helps someone.... because nobody offer any suggestions to me.
