well, i think,the right beginning motorcycle would be a harley-davidson 1200 sportster.in any decision you create keep the silicone down and trip secure.

I think the FZ6 is pretty competitive as a beginner bike. I have a 250R and its just enough power and all around for me. I think the FZ6 would be a serious contender for me to have as my next upgrade.

Sometimes you don't need the sportiest bike..

I would recommend starting on a 600 only because you'll have room for growth. Anything less than 600 will get old after a while.

You gotta start on a 250. You don't want to over do it... I started on bikes too big for me and definitely slowed my own riding growth and what not. It coulda been a lot easier to just build my way up.

Yamaha has a new SR400 standard thumper ...looks just like the old SR500... NO E start !

I've got FZ6 for first bike. I think you have to measure more things like riding position, size and your body size rather than 400 or 600cc. 600 is ok I thnk. I tried Kawasaki ER6N and was small to me, but still 600cc. If you are a lady - FZ6 is certainly not great for the first bike.
My advise - go and test as many as you can.
I'm sure if you try 500cc and above - you'll never got for 250
Otherwise FZ6 is a great bike!

My FZ6 was my 3rd bike and it was also the 3rd for my wife.

The first consideration is the size of the rider. For an FZ6 to be a beginner bike, the rider needs to be somewhat tall and strong. The height and strength needs definitely become less with experience. My wife NEVER could have had her FZ6 as her first bike.

The next consideration is maturity, and rider education. If the rider is a responsible adult, with a healthy respect for the risks involved with riding, then the FZ6 could be a decent first bike. Below 6 to 8k RPM's the bike is really docile, above that, and it becomes a bike that is NOT for new riders. The education part is simple, take, and pass, a MSF Basic Rider course before getting on the bike.

My first bike was a 1982 Suzuki GS450, that was actually a great first bike. Nice size, not super fast, but could outpace most 800cc cruisers.

Really, the FZ6 is a great 2nd bike that you will want to keep for a long time.
